My habit contributes to my procrastinating tendencies.Eva / TXBookjunkiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05934030103779551827noreply@blogger.comBlogger73125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5994083377070140771.post-49229370758353982862013-03-05T06:30:00.000-06:002013-03-05T06:30:03.194-06:00To Buy or Not To Buy

The hard decisions that a booklover/reader goes through. To buy or not to buy? Today I have the difficult task of deciding whether or not to buy an anthology. Nalini Singh's Wild Invitation is out today. I love Nalini's writing and she is an autobuy for me. However, I tend to stay away from anthologies. Usually, in an anthology, there is only one, maybe two, author whose story I'm interested in reading. That's an expensive short story. But sometimes it pays off. You end up reading all the stories in the anthology and sometimes you end up discovering a new to you author whose story really grabs you. I was introduced to Meljean Brooks as well as a few other authors this way.

But this anthology features only Nalini Singh stories. Which is awesome if it wasn't for the fact that I've already read and own two of the four stories provided in this anthology. And of the two new stories I'm really only interested in one (and early reviews have many proclaiming it as good as I expected). So do I buy the anthology where I'm basically paying $7.99 for one short story? Okay, two short stories because I'll read the other story too if I have it. Or do I wait and hope for the standalone release of the short story that I really want? Decisions, decisions...

I love the weekends. Not just because I don't have to work but it means I get more then just a few hours to read. I can read in to the wee hours of the night or all day (or even all weekend if I'm being extremely lazy about chores and my to do list). I obviously really enjoy long holiday weekends. Those provide awesome opportunities to binge read and do series/author re-reads.

I occasionally get in some reading during the weekday. I'll sneak read at work if it's slow even though I feel like I'm back in elementary school when I do this. I use to read in class with my book in my lap while my textbook was on my desk. Now, instead of a book, my Kindle is sitting to the side of my monitor. I try not to start new books on weekday evenings since I prefer to read books in one sitting (I'm a fast reader) but mainly because I have no self control and will stay up reading until I finish the book. Of course there are exceptions - like when an auto-buy author releases a new book that I've been dying to read. Staying up all night to read a new Nalini Singh or Kristen Ashley story is not a hardship.

So, are you a nibbler - reading bits here and there when time permits, or do you devour up your books in big bites like I like to do?

The last full day of AAD started out overcast and rainy. It stormed while I breakfasted with Jen (@Twimom227) before we headed out to a field trip of the Garden District with author Theresa Meyers. I'm so glad I packed my umbrella and new rain boots. We visited Lafeyette Cemetery and walked around the Garden District looking at the historic homes.
We kicked the evening off at the Samhain reception before splitting up for the evening. Some of us went off to the Author Pub Crawl. Jennifer and I got into author Adrian Phoenix's tour of Dante's French Quarter. I haven't read her series but it sounded pretty interesting after I heard about the characters and the storyline from the author as we walked around the French Quarter so I'm adding it to my TBR list. We made stops at Lafitte's Tavern, St. Louis Cathedral, Cafe du Monde, and the Mississippi River. It was a fun way to end my trip of the Big Easy. However, the best part of the trip for me was all the people I met - the bloggers I follow, friends I'd made on Twitter, authors (new and old to me), and new friends I made. I can't wait to decide what reader's convention to go to next year!

I got some sightseeing in today. I met up with Felicia (@thegeekyblogger) for breakfast (I would not recommend their eggs and grits since they needed seasoning but the bacon was tasty) at Cafe Beignet before heading over to the Jackson Square area.
We walked around the area and did a little shopping until lunch when we stopped by Oceania for a po boy. So. Good. I was adventurous and went with the blackened alligator. I can't exactly describe what it tastes like (not exactly like chicken though), and the first bite had a gamy aftertaste. However, it was delicious! Then, being the old fuddy-duddy that I am, I went back to my hotel room and took a 2 hour nap (skipping the masquerade/dance after dinner) so I could go to the small burlesque midnight show at Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse -- burlesque dancers backed by a jazz band.

I happened to attend several panels Cynthia Eden was on (really, I went for the topics not to stalk her...sort of). It's so interesting listening to the authors answer questions about the writing process (what influences their writing, how they come about with their ideas, how they keep things research to keep things realistic, etc). They're so friendly, and it's fun talking to them - they're readers too who enjoy reading the same books that you also love who also happen to write some of the stories you love. The panels also introduces me to authors I have not read yet but will now go check out after hearing them speak about their book.

I finally had a chance to get some beignets on this trip. These are from Cafe Beignet, which is across the street from the hotel. I ran into Jen (@Twimom) in the hotel lobby and ended up tagging along. A huge group of us enjoyed some classic New Orleans drinks and foods. I attended Kresley Cole's Book Tour for "Lothaire" (Book 12 of her Immortals After Dark series) tonight in Austin, Texas. So much fun! I enjoyed meeting up with some of my Twitter friends (some for the first time in person) - @SpazP, @LouisaEdwards, @AnaFarrish, and @CrankyAmy. It was lots of fun talking books with several of the other attendees prior to the start of the book signing.
Here's the back cover blurb:

Bestselling author Maya Banks’s beguiling new trilogy features three unforgettable brothers risking everything to save their clan and their legacy—and to surrender their hearts to love.

Ewan McCabe, the eldest, is a warrior determined to vanquish his enemy. Now, with the time ripe for battle, his men are ready and Ewan is poised to take back what is his—until a blue-eyed, raven-haired temptress is thrust upon him. Mairin may be the salvation of Ewan’s clan, but for a man who dreams only of revenge, matters of the heart are strange territory to conquer.

The illegitimate daughter of the king, Mairin possesses prized property that has made her a pawn—and wary of love. Her worst fears are realized when she is rescued from peril only to be forced into marriage by her charismatic and commanding savior, Ewan McCabe. But her attraction to her ruggedly powerful new husband makes her crave his surprisingly tender touch; her body comes alive under his sensual mastery. And as war draws near, Mairin’s strength, spirit, and passion challenge Ewan to conquer his demons—and embrace a love that means more than revenge and land.
An excerpt is available on the author's website.

Micah Decker has been tormented by the night he and his friends were forced to watch Jaimma Flannigan die. Helpless, horrified, the nightmares still haunt him. As does the knowledge that the one woman he wants above all others fears him now.

Kyra Flannigan lost her sister in the brutal murders that haunted their hometown more than a decade before. And there are those who still believe Micah, Logan, and Crowe, committed those murders. There are many who believe Wayne Sorbenson was innocent. Kyra’s parents are two of those people. Kyra has always wanted Micah. Even at a time when he had been slipping around to see her sister and she was covering for them, he’s haunted first her girlish dreams, then her adult fantasies. She can’t accept that he killed Jaimma. She can’t forget that her parents were destroyed by her sisters death, or that Wayne, the man they accused of killing her, was a close friend of her father’s.

That won’t stop Micah from going after the woman that haunts his lusts, as well as his dreams of a future. Now a local rancher, he’s fought, worked until his hands were bloody and is quickly on the road to building a legacy for the children he doesn’t yet have. He wants Kyra to be the mother of those children, the wife he’s dreamed of having. Flame haired and wild as the wind, she’s possibly untamable, most likely unattainable, but he’s going to fight like hell to seduce the little hellion into his bed. He couldn’t have imagined the hell that would open up once he does so. Or the past that will return with a vengeance when women begin dying again. Women that Micah, Logan and Crowe have a connection to. Suspicion, fear and loyalty will tear at Kyra, until she makes the choice that endangers her life and the soul of the man she loves.

Retribution by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Detective Pale Rysen, an Alpha, is determined to secretly rebuild the Wolf packs from the ashes of genocide. When a killer starts picking off young females looking for sanctuary, it's his job to protect them. Forced to work with a hated enemy, he fears his cover will be blown.

Jade-Scarlet's membership in the powerful Order of the Sibile has always been controversial. A half-wolf, Jade's unstable psychic powers are a disappointment to her mercenary handlers. So when the Oracle commands her to work with Pale, Jade must prove herself...even if it means challenging the enigmatic shifter.

Yet Pale triggers more than her curiosity. He sends her into Heat, and the intense sexual attraction could mean losing control of her gifts—something she can't allow. As the number of victims rises, so does the danger. A murderous darkness wants them both dead. But even if they stop the killer, how long can they fight each other?
Tempting the Enemy was just as enjoyable the second go around. It was an interesting world with very likeable characters. I loved how Tenorio wrote Pale; he's a true alpha hero - honorable, possessive, but patient and tender with his potential mate. The heroine isn't a push over either. Jade is a beautiful match for an alpha; she can protect herself but knows when she needs help or should heed advice. I love this scene in which Jade allows Pale to show his possessiveness yet lets him know that its because she allows it.

She was safe. Safe and exactly where she needed to be. That is, until Rysen reached down and swept her up into his hold. Cradled in his arms, she opened her mouth to protest, but the hard command in his eyes kept her silent. Something...Wolf was going on and he needed her not to fight it...If she was right and Rysen was the Alpha of this particular group, undermining his authority would be about as healthy for her as slashing her own wrists.

Besides, his arms around her felt good.

Still. "You know I'm allowing this, right?"

His mild grunt was matched with a slight squeeze around her thighs. "If you say so."

So he knew he was being pandered to. She shrugged and slid her arms around his neck, breathing him in and letting him have his way. She pulled a touch of moonlight, just enough to make her point, and let her palm heat against his neck as they passed the two other men. Not to sizzle, just to tease. She smiled into his shoulder when she felt his breath hitch. She brought her lips to Rysen's ear. "Just so you don't forget."
The whodunit was also a nice backdrop for the growth of Pale and Jade's relationship. Definitely a nice twist. I highly recommend trying out Dee Tenorio's work. Rating: 5/5

I had a chance to read a few chapters this past weekend, and so far the story is really pulling me in. This looks to be a compelling contemporary suspense novel. Just a heads up though - it was a bit confusing at the beginning of the story because Virgil is using an alias when he's first introduced. So, from page one I was trying to figure out if the blurb had the wrong name or if the character I thought was to be Virgil was actually someone else. It becomes clearer as the heroine discovers more about Virgil and the situation, but it did have me puzzled with the storyline for a moment.

Here's the back cover blurb for Inside:

Virgil Skinner served fourteen years for a murder he didn't commit. He's finally been exonerated, but he can't escape the gang he joined in order to survive. They'll do anything to keep him from telling what he knows. And if they can't get to Virgil they'll go after his sister and her kids.

The California Department of Corrections needs someone to infiltrate another gang, one that's taking control of the state's most notorious supermax. Virgil's the perfect candidate - and he'll do it in exchange for his sister's protection.

Assistant deputy warden Peyton Adams is opposed to having Virgil in her prison. How will she protect him if things go bad? Besides, she's attracted to him; she might even be falling in love with him. That makes her all the more desperate to keep him safe - and it gives him someone else to lose.
Eva / TXBookjunkiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05934030103779551827noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5994083377070140771.post-91009670114872542282011-04-10T20:39:00.002-05:002011-04-10T20:54:52.694-05:00Review: Steam & Sorcery by Cindy Spencer Pape

Book 1 of Cindy Spencer Pape's Gaslight Chronicles, "Steam and Sorcery" is a sweet romantic, steampunk read that takes a while to build up steam. (yeah - I went there. I couldn't resist.) I almost gave up on this after the first quarter of the book but forced myself to forge ahead. I think all the background story built up too slowly. Practically the first quarter of the book passed before the hero and heroine even appear together for more than a paragraph. I would have enjoyed this book more if the first half of the book could have been condensed into a few chapters. A few scenes were jarring to me as a historical romance reader even though the author provides an explanation. An example: the heroine, in her role as governess, is invited to dine at a dinner party - hosted by the hero's boss, a duke. The author provides an explanation, but it just didn't seemed historically accurate to the time period steampunk is set in. I understand she's not exactly of the same class as the downstairs servants, but she's not even a distant relationship or presented as such before the invite.

The children/orphans the hero takes in were interesting and definitely stole the show. I'd especially be interested in reading Wink's story. This e-book is available now from Carina Press. Below is the back cover blurb:

Sir Merrick Hadrian hunts monsters, both human and supernatural. A Knight of the Order of the Round Table, his use of magick and the technologies of steam power have made him both respected and feared. But his considerable skills are useless in the face of his greatest challenge, guardianship of five unusual children. At a loss, Merrick enlists the aid of a governess.

Miss Caroline Bristol is reluctant to work for a bachelor but she needs a position, and these former street children touch her heart. While she tends to break any mechanical device she touches, it never occurs to her that she might be something more than human. All she knows is that Merrick is the most dangerously attractive man she's ever met—and out of reach for a mere governess.

When conspiracy threatens to blur the distinction between humans and monsters, Caroline and Merrick must join forces, and the fate of humanity hinges upon their combined skills of steam and sorcery...

Book one of Larissa Ione's new Lords of Deliverance series, Eternal Rider is a little slow in places with all the world building and numerous cast of characters. However, when the action starts you can't read fast enough in your need to discover what happens.

From the back cover blurb:

His name is Ares, and the fate of mankind tests on his powerful shoulders. If he falls to the forces of evil, the world falls too. As one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, he is far stronger than any mortal, but even he cannot fight his destiny forever. Not when his own brother plots against him.

Yet there is one last hope. Gifted in a way other humans can't - or won't - understand, Cara Thornhart is the key to both this Horseman's safety and his doom. But involving Cara will prove treacherous, even beyond the maddening, dangerous desire that seizes them the moment they meet. For staving off eternal darkness could have a staggering cost: Cara's life.

This new series stands on it's own from Ione's previous Demonica series, but characters from the Demonica series do make an appearance. Reading the Demonica series may help with understanding the world Eternal Rider is set in and the background of the characters from Demonica that make an appearance. Ione does a good job of introducing new readers to the demon world she has built (as well as reminding those already familiar with Demonica) and what happened previously in the Demonica series that affect this new series and the characters involved. I definitely recommend referencing the provided glossary before starting the book.

The ending was a little anti-climatic for me, but I did like how Ione resolved the issue with Cara and the agimortus, the object/thing/person that would convert Ares into War and trigger the fall of the world if it breaks. I'm looking forward to seeing how the other Horsemen are dealt with - especially Pestilence, who has truly turned evil.
Liu
Marjorie M. Liu's latest installment in her Dirk and Steele series is the November 30, 2010 release of In the Dark of Dreams. I haven't had a chance to read all the books in this series, but I greatly enjoyed reading The Fire King, the 9th book in this series.

One of these days I'll hunt down the rest of her backlist to read this series in order. However, while this story is part of the Dirk and Steele series and previous characters from the Dirk and Steele world make an appearance, this story can stand on it's own.

It was interesting to see how the chance meeting between the hero and heroine as young children created a bond between the two that affected their futures. Each has suffered loss and disappointment, and it was nice seeing the author have the two work to open themselves up to each other and not just rely on their bond to create an instant relationship between the two. The only time I was jarred out of the story was when the hero and heroine finally have sex. After days of running from the bad guys, swimming in the ocean, crawling through a jungle, and more swimming in the ocean, wouldn't you have wanted a shower to wash off all that salt water as soon as you were in a safe place? I'm not familiar with fishing vessels, so perhaps there wasn't a shower in the head. Books usually don't go into detail about personal needs, but I think a mention of her doing the best she could to freshen up the first morning she was on the boat would have been helpful and realistic.

My Thoughts:

Crown of Crystal Flame by C.L. Wilson was an awesome wrap-up to the Tairen Soul series. I was a bit hesitant to start this book since the previous book, Queen of Song and Souls (Book 4 of the series), seemed to drag (I actually ended up skimming it). However, this final book was action packed! Danger surrounds Rain and Elly at every turn. I was a third of the way through the book, and I couldn't imagine what else Rain and Elly would have to confront. There were definitely several chapters that ended on cliff hangers - leaving you wondering if they were going to be able to escape the threat facing them and/or their people.

***SPOILER BELOW***

Rain and Elly eventually get their happy ever after ending, but I'm not sure if I liked the way the final showdown ended. It seemed a little too pat and fairy tale like for me. I know Elly - and Elly and Rain together - are powerful, but this still just seemed a bit much to me. I guess I imagined something more complex to resolve the threat after all Elly has gone through leading up to the final showdown. Although, now that I think it over, Elly sure does escape capture quite often via fantastical rescues. Then again, this is a fantasy book. So maybe I'm being a little too critical.

I'd definitely recommend reading books 1 through 3 (Lord of the Fading Lands; Lady of Light and Shadows; and, King of Sword and Sky) prior to reading this book. I don't think I really missed much skipping most of book 4 (Queen of Song and Souls). Wilson seemed to do a decent job recapping events that were pertinent from book 4.

It's book one of her new Otherkin trilogy. I enjoyed reading her latest paranormal. It was interesting to see bits and pieces of various beliefs regarding the underworld and hell meshed together in Silver's new world. The heroine's loneliness felt a bit spoon-fed. Yes, she's been alone since she's been a teen. Why doesn't she try to make friends though? What's stopping her? The relationship between the hero and heroine seemed more one-sided. The hero seemed to be the one doing more of the giving then the heroine, but I guess you could assume that was due to the heroine being afraid to connect since she'd lost her family when she was young.
However, I do like the new world Silver has put together, and I'm interested in seeing how the overall arc of the story resolves itself as well as how the other soul reaper brothers meet their fate. My take: .
